Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870)

Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870)

Andreas Schelfhout (The Hague, February 16, 1787 - there, April 19, 1870) was a Dutch landscape painter, etcher and lithographer. Schelfhout was the son of the Ghent frame maker and gilder, Jean-Baptiste Schelfaut, who settled in The Hague in 1788. He started as an employee of his father making and gilding frames until he was twenty-four. He was also a facade painter, but also made paintings in his spare time. In 1811 Schelfhout made his debut in an exhibition with three small works. These landscapes attracted the interest of the public. His parents understood that he had potential and sent him for further training to Joannes Breckenheijmer, who was a stage decorator at the Haagse Schouwburg. He learned not only the technical aspects of the trade, such as perspective and paint preparation, but also how to paint landscapes or urban scenes.
