Anton Rudolf Mauve (Jr.) The Hague 1876-1962 Blaricum The painter AR Mauve Jr. was the son of Anton Mauve. He painted landscapes, seascapes, figures and portraits. He Signed his work with: AR Mauve. Mauve Jr. was a member of the 'Gooise painters' association'. The painter Anton Rudolph Mauve was born on December 10, 1876 in The Hague and was the son of the well-known Anton Mauve Sr. Anton Rudoph succeeded his father as a painter. He roamed all his life in "Het land van Mauve" without being able to approach the artistic greatness of his father. From 1895 to 1897 and from 1898 to 1922 he lived in Laren. He then stayed for a year in Bussum and finally in Anton Jr. did not like romance - not even in construction - and that is why he had a modern rectilinear and somewhat rigid house built on the Drift. He did not know much romance or happiness in his life and this is reflected in Lead-gray skies and land ravaged by cold, storm and rain dominated his thinking. He painted lonely and gloomy moor landscapes, pools with reeds knocked down by storm and other dramatic subjects in mostly dark tones. His oeuvre betrays a growing melancholy and hopelessness that The background to this may have been a sense of powerlessness to emulate his father.A steadily worsening deaf ness will certainly have contributed to that loneliness. Although he could not reach the height of his father, Anton Jr. did have quality as a painter and he was able to express his feelings in his work.
