As a child, in the Sunday service of the Reformed Church, he made sketches of the interior during a church service, which he later developed into a Rembrandt painting. He was allowed to go to the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, where he studied, like so many others, under the professors Alleb_, Dake and Van de Waay. His fellow students were the later 'moderns' Jan Sluyters and Leo Gestel. His early work shows that he was deeply impressed by the Hague School.
