Armand Avril is a self-taught artist.
Lives and works in Catignac, France
Armand Avril is inspired by African art. He likes the earthy colors and the uninhibited spontaneity. Avril makes figurative work in the Art Brut and Primitivism styles. Art Brut is an art style that is also called outsider art. The artists and musicians who represent this style are maladjusted/antisocial, they have an aversion to imposed culture and the concept of high and low art. Primitivism has a similar philosophical basis, the pursuit of the primitive - that which has not been corrupted by civilization -, the return to the spontaneous and original.
Until the mid-1960s, Armand Avril mainly painted, later he also made assemblages of combinations of objects such as scrap metal, bottle caps and other abandoned objects.
