August ALLEBE (Amsterdam 1838 - Amsterdam 1927)
Painter and lithographer.
Studied at the State Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. From its foundation in 1880 he was professor there and from 1890 to 1906 director.
His oeuvre includes portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Like many other painters at the time, he worked for a while in the countryside, in his case in Dongen, in the sixties of the nineteenth century.
His early works were romantic, but later he switched to a more realistic style. As a teacher he had an important influence on the painters of the so-called Amsterdam School.
His students include Jan Voerman, Antoon Derkinderen, Jan Veth, Jan Sluijters, Jan Toorop, Richard Roland Holst, Jan Tiele and Lizzy Ansingh. Mondriaan also studied at the Rijksacademie when Allebe was director there.
In addition, there were artists who took lessons with him after graduation, such as Suze Robertson and George Breitner. Illustrators also studied with Allebe, including Johan Braakensiek, Cornelis Jetses and Tjeerd Bottema.
He maintained an extensive correspondence with his ex-pupils and had many contacts in the art world, for example with the Amsterdam Joffers.
