Cornelia SCHLEIME (Berlin 1953)
Cornelia Schleime is a multidisciplinary artist, best known in painting for her portraits. Born in East Berlin in 1953, she studied painting and printmaking at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1975-1980. In the early 1980s, she was active in the punk scene, expressing mainly feminist themes through performance art and in numerous small films. In addition, she was critical of the concept of art in the GDR, which led to an exhibition ban. Slime then applied for an exit visa for West Berlin. She had been observed for years by the East German state security service. In 1984, when she moved from East to West Berlin, her old apartment was looted; most of her early works have since been considered lost, including 95 paintings. From 1989 she received several scholarships in West Berlin, which took her to New York for a year and then to Kenya, Brazil, Hawaii and Indonesia. Since the 1990s she has specialized in painting large format portraits on canvas, often using shellac and acrylic paint in a mixed media. Cornelia Schlemme, who lives and works in Berlin, also published her first novel in 2008.
