Education: Etienne Elias studied at the Royal Academy in Ghent. He lived and worked in Ostend
Etienne Elias is the pseudonym of Etienne Michiels, when he was twenty he joined the Ghent Augustinian monastery as brother Elia, hence his pseudonym. During this period Elias learned to paint non-figuratively and after four years he left the monastery again. Etienne Elias' painting style is very expressive and quite diverse. Although he continued to experiment, his expressive colorful figuration is always recognizable.
