Fratelli Toso
Toso was one of the manufacturers who revived glass art after the occupation of Italy by Napoleon at the end of the eighteenth century. Pietro Toso opened in 1854 with his sons Fratelli Toso (then also: Pietro Toso all'Insegna di S. Giovanni). Production started with utensils, but in 1864 the factory made a chandelier for the opening of the Murano Glass Museum. Because of the war, the factory moved to Livorno in 1917, to return to Murano in 1924. The factory suffered setbacks, but was saved by a new generation of Tosos. In 1979 Fratelli Toso was split into Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso and Fratelli Toso International, the latter went bankrupt in 1981.
The factory is known for producing murrina glass, a technique that uses cross-sections of glass rods to create complex patterns. The Toso family was so skilled in manufacturing products using this technique that they were called the “murrinari” in the nineteenth century.
