Georg Baselitz (1938)

Painter, Sculptor, Graphic artist, Draftsman

Georg BASELITZ (Deutschbaselitz, 23 January 1938) is a contemporary German visual artist (painter, sculptor, draftsman and graphic artist).

Baselitz is best known for his 'upside down' paintings, in which the motifs are depicted upside down. Baselitz, in the 1960s, was one of the first to turn against the dominant minimalist abstract art of the day and go back to the roots of European expressive painting. He was influenced by Edvard Munch and was a major influence on De Nieuwe Wilden himself.

His work is considered to be neo-expressionism in contemporary art. It is at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. Outwardly, the paintings are related to the action painting variant of abstract expressionism, in their format, rough texture and gestures. The paintings contain clearly recognizable figurative motifs, although printed by inversion to the second plan, in which the human figure takes the central place. He works on large format canvas and panel.
