Gijs DONKER (Amstelveen 1964)
Gijs Donker was born in 1964 as the first son of the Rotterdam publisher Willem Donker. From 1989 to 1991 he was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 1989 he founded the artist collective “After Nature” together with Peter Klashorst, Ernst Voss, Bart Domburg and Jurriaan van Hall. The group opposes the prevailing abstract expressionism and brings an innovative, figurative painting style. The first exhibition of After Nature with Donker took place in 1990 in the Seasons Galerie in The Hague. Together with his brothers Justus Donker (1966) and Aad Donker (1967-1998), who were also members of After Nature, he became known as one of 'the Donker brothers' or 'the Donker brothers'. In 2011 he was the winner of the Kees van Dongen Schilderprijs.
