Gustav Klimt (1862-1918)

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918)

Gustav Klimt (Baumgarten (Vienna), July 14, 1862 - Vienna, February 6, 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession, the Vienna Art Nouveau movement. BiographyKlimt was born near Vienna in a poor family. His father engraved gold and this may have influenced Klimt's use of gold in his paintings. He received his artistic training at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule f_r Kunst und Industrie in the years 1879-1883. Almost until the turn of the century he worked in a climate created by Hans Makart, a dominant figure in the Viennese art world. In his early days, Klimt's work was not appreciated by the establishment, who considered his paintings pornographic. To oppose traditional views, Klimt founded the Wiener Secession, the Austrian variant of Art Nouveau or modern style. Klimt later gained recognition and was named an honorary lecturer at the University of Munich and Vienna. Klimt passed away at the age of 55. He is buried at the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna. His signature signature is chiseled on the stone. Style Symbolism, eroticism, pronounced sense for the decorative and graceful refinement characterize his paintings and drawings. In his allegorical representations and in his numerous portraits, he weaves stylized areas of color together in an unparalleled way, like a kind of patchwork. With an infinite tenderness he treats exclusively the woman in his work. His work shows great craftsmanship, great sensitivity and a sense of color. The Dutch artist Jan Toorop has been an important source of inspiration for Klimt. The fine play of flowing lines is a striking resemblance between Toorop and Klimt. Klimt had a great influence on fellow painters, such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Klimt's work is closely related to that of the Belgian symbolist Fernand Khnopff. Works Gustav Klimt's work mainly consists of paintings, but he has also made murals, drawings and collages. Several of these are on display in the Secession Building. Klimt is widely credited for using gold in his paintings. This is also visible in the 1901 painting Judith I, pictured opposite. The unapproachable cruel woman depicted here is characteristic of Klimt's style. On the one hand, he portrays women more flattering than they actually are. On the other hand, he deprives them of the feminine and maternal at the same time. Another very famous painting is 'The Kiss', in which a large man, dressed in a very showy dressing gown, embraces a woman closely.
