Hein Kray (1901-1995)

Hein Kray (1901-1995)

Hein Kray (1901-1995) was a student of Jean Krans and Eduard Houbolt. He studied medicine in Groningen, but did not complete the study. In 1933 he obtained a certificate of LO drawing. Until 1966, with a few interruptions in Groningen and The Hague, he lived in Assen. In that year he moved to Zuidlaren, where he made a beautiful drawing of Berend Botje. Hein Kray painted, drew in ink and pastel, watercoloured, etched, lithographed, modeled, illustrated, designed drawing methods for education and also practiced applied arts. Kray developed his own style; naturalistic, slightly impressionistic, with the approach to nature as ideal. He made binding designs for the books his wife wrote. Together with her he made a comic strip for the newspaper for years: she wrote the text, he made the drawings. In the 1920s he made many political prints for the magazine ?the wooden pump?. Besides in Groningen and Friesland he gave drawing lessons in Assen, Hoogeveen and Klazienaveen. Kray drew several churches in Drenthe and also worked a lot in the Assen area. A painting of the Zuidlaardermarkt around 1200 with approximately the same dimensions as the plates by Isings testifies to his admiration for this history painter. Kray preferred to paint after nature: landscapes with trees, old barns, dolmens, the heath, a sand drift. As I paint, he said, centuries before me the great masters have done it too. By the way, he did not want to put himself in line with these great masters with this statement, his great modesty was a guarantee of that. For years he exhibited, together with Evert Musch, in the summer months in the gymnasium in Assen. Sunday visitors would find open spaces between the canvases hanging on the wall. One of Hein Kray's works had hung there. He removed them on Saturday night and brought them back on Monday morning. Handel was good, the artist must have thought, but not on Sundays. Hein Kray was co-founder of the Drentse Schilders. He spent the last years of his life in the Slingenborgh nursing home in Assen.
