Jaap Kaas (1898-1972)

Jaap Kaas (1898-1972)

Sculptor

Kaas was born in Amsterdam, but spent his childhood (1900 to 1914) in Antwerp. There he followed an evening course in sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After the outbreak of the First World War, the Kaas family was forced to return to Amsterdam. Kaas was accepted to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, where he was taught by Jan Bronner, among others, from 1914 to 1920. Mari Andriessen was one of his classmates. After graduating from the academy, he was employed by Monumentenzorg, among others, and worked as a sculptor on various construction projects, such as the Theater Tuschinski (1920) and the Colonial Institute (1922) in Amsterdam. He was married to the novelist Elisabeth de Mooij from 1923 to 1932 and remarried in 1936 to Margot Brandon. In 1936 he was appointed as a teacher at the Amsterdam Institute for Applied Arts Education, where he was fired again in 1941, as a Jew. Until 1943, he was appointed by the occupying forces as director of the Secondary Jewish Applied Arts Education. Characteristic for Kaas are animal figures, for which he found inspiration in Artis, among other things. He had his own studio here from 1927 to 1945. In the long run he was even regarded as 'the sculptor of Artis'. From January 1944 to May 1945, the Kaas family went into hiding with a family in Rotterdam. After the Second World War he was appointed as a teacher at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences from 1946 to 1963, but he lived in Amsterdam. Some of his students were Jan Meefout, Henk Dannenburg, Ineke van Dijk, Kiek Bak, Jo Esenkbrink and Arie Teeuwisse. When he died at the age of 74, he, as a person and as an artist, had been forgotten. Archive-J.
