Jan Heesters (1893-1982)

Jan HEESTERS (Schijndel 1893 - Schijndel 1982)

Heesters was the son of a wheelwright and the intention was that he would succeed his father with this profession. When he chose to become an artist at the age of 23, he had mainly acquired technical drawing skills. From 1917 he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He found inspiration for his earliest works in Vincent van Gogh. In later years he continued to make figurative art, mainly capturing the landscape of the Meierij. He devoted himself to making drawings and etchings. Besides being an artist, he was an art teacher in 's-Hertogenbosch. After his studies he settled in an old house on the Pompstraat in Schijndel, where he continued to live and work all his life. This house is the present Museum Jan Heestershuis.
