Jan Henderikse was educated at the Free Academy in The Hague.
He lives and works in Antwerp (Belgium) and Brooklyn, New York (United States).
Jan Henderikse started his career as an informal painter. In 1960 he was co-founder of the Dutch Nul group. He started experimenting with assemblies and the effects of many different materials, such as cork, storage crates, beer crates, license plates and money. In the mid-1970s, he became involved in filmmaking, publishing limited editions, works of art featuring found and discarded photos. Jan Henderikse shamelessly uses all kinds of materials that come his way. The originality of his work lies in his method: the presentations of pieces of reality without further explanation. Jan Henderikse often looked for his materials among the waste. For a long time Henderikse preferred the remains of small human needs. In his more recent works, Jan Henderikse focuses more on the threatening aspects of important world events.
