Johan Melse was born in 1887 in Goes. He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and decorator. His subjects were city and village views, sea and river views, still lifes, folk scenes and religious works. The woodcuts by Johan Melse are of great quality and have also found their way into various books and publications. He followed lessons in painting with Gerard Jacobs.
