Johan van der Keuken (1938-2001)
Van der Keuken became known as a photographer in the 1950s, through his photo book 'We are 17' (1955). Later followed Achter Glass (1957), Paris Mortel (1963) and After Image (1992). After his education at the IDHEC in Paris (1956-1958), he made his debut as a director in 1960 with the short film 'een Zondag'. Van der Keuken made fifty films. The films showed his critical attitude towards industrialized society. The last film Johan van der Keuken made, The Great Holiday, is a moving film adaptation of what happens to someone who knows he will die soon. Both Van der Keuken's photography and film have received national and international recognition and have been awarded regularly. In 1988 he received the Dutch Culture Prize for his oeuvre. In 2000 he received the Bert Haanstra Oeuvre Prize and in the same year he also received the Persistence of Vision Award from the San Francisco International Film Festival.
