John Giorno (1936)

John GIORNO

Poet, Painter, Printmaker

Born in New York in 1936 (USA)

Education:

John Giorno is an American poet and elocutionist. After graduating from Columbia University, Giorno becomes a stockbroker. However, his love lies in writing poetry. In the 1960s, the young poet Giorno came into contact with the lively and creative artist world of New York. He meets artists such as Andy Warhol, Bob Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. Especially Warhol is of great influence on Giorno.

He lives and works in New York

Giorno concludes that poetry is 75 years behind painting, sculpture, dance and music. While these art forms employ modern mass media and technology to reach audiences in new ways, poetry is confined to the written word in books. In 1965 he founded the artists' collective Giorno Poetry Systems to renew poetry. Key word for Giorno is communication. Through conventional and sometimes unconventional means, he brings poetry into contact with the broadest and most diverse audience possible. In 1968 he introduced DIAL-A-POEM where people could listen to a poem by calling a telephone number. The experiment was a great success and millions of people were exposed to poetry read by members of Giorno Poetry Systems such as William S. Burroughs, Allan Ginsberg, and John Cage.

Giorno is constantly looking for new ways to promote poetry. He does this by means of modern communication techniques such as telephone, radio and television. He produces poetry videos, films, music albums, cassettes and CDs. Through this combination of art, poetry and literature, his words reach an unprecedented audience. In the 60s and 70s he places poems on everyday objects such as matchboxes, T-shirts, flags, curtains and chocolate bars. In the 1990s, Giorno brought together various poets, musicians and even rappers and stand-up comedians, realizing new forms of communication and art. By means of words that fill the screen in different sizes, he creates a new kind of poetry artwork, the so-called screenprinted poems. In these works of art he builds up powerful and dramatic images by means of words and sentences. These works of art impress and surprise not only because of their design and visual language, but also because of the message the works contain.
