Joop CROMPVOETS (Swalmen 1952 - Maastricht 2022)

Biography / Education

Joop Crompvoets, son of ceramist Sef Crompvoets, was educated at the City Academy of Applied Arts in Maastricht from 1968 to 1971. In 1983 he founded his own ceramics studio De Walsberg, which has been located in Swalmen since 1987. Many international exhibitions followed, in which Crompvoets organized summer workshops for students from the Netherlands and abroad together with Eric Stockl. In 1986 he was a guest participant in the Westerwaldpreis de Höhr-Grenzhausen and in 1987 he won the Gouda ceramics prize. In 2003 Crompvoets was guest curator of the international salt glaze exhibition in the Tiendschuur in Tegelen. Ceramics have always been the most important medium for Crompvoets, although in his last years he also made way for sculptural elements such as small sculptures and wall reliefs.
