Karel de Bazel (1869-1923)
Artist
Karel de Bazel was born in Den Helder in 1869 and started his career as an apprentice to a carpenter. He followed an evening course in architecture at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. There he was appointed in 1888 as a draftsman at an architectural firm. From 1889 he worked at the office of PJH Cuypers where he became chief. In 1895 he broke with Cuypers because of a difference in religion and started his own company with JLM Lauweriks. In 1904 he founded the famous Amsterdam furniture studio De Ploeg.
In addition, De Bazel, together with HP Berlage, was the forerunner of Rationalism, an architectural style that was very important for the style of the Amsterdam School. He is known for his designs for housing blocks for workers on the Van Beuningenplein and the Staatsliedenbuurt in Amsterdam. Besides designing buildings, he also made designs for furniture, utensils and graphics.
