Painter, Sculptor, Graphic artist, Photographer, Draftsman

Laszlo MOHOLY-NAGY (1895 Bacsborsód - 1946 Chicago)

László Moholy-Nagy was born László Weisz. His father Lipót Weisz left the family around the birth of the child, after which an uncle took care of the family. László and his brothers took this uncle's surname in 1910: Nagy. In 1919 he also added a reference to the place Mohol to this name: in this southern Hungarian town (now Mol in Serbian Vojvodina) he spent part of his childhood, until the family moved to Szeged in 1905. There he went to high school. From 1913 to 1918, László Nagy studied law in Budapest, a degree he did not finish. In the war years 1916 and 1917 he had to serve at the front, until he returned to Hungary wounded in 1917.

Since 1918, Moholy-Nagy was engaged in painting. In 1919, after the fall of the Hungarian Council Republic, he, like many other Hungarian artists, moved to Vienna, only to move on to Berlin a year later. There he married the photographer Lucia Schulz in 1921. On September 24, 1922, he attended with her in Jena a meeting of the Städtische Kunstverein of Walter Dexel and the next day, in Weimar, the Congress of Dadaists and Constructivists organized by Theo van Doesburg.[1] In 1923 he was appointed as a teacher at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he also worked on typography and photography. In 1928 he left the Bauhaus and set up his own studio.

After the seizure of power by the Nazis, Moholy-Nagy fled via Amsterdam to London in 1934, where he had exchanges with English abstract sculptors, such as Barbara Hepworth. In 1937 he settled in Chicago, where he founded a short-lived New Bauhaus, followed in 1938 by the School of Design, which was renamed the Institute of Design in 1944, which still exists today.

Moholy-Nagy died in 1946, a year after acquiring American citizenship, of leukemia.
