Leopold WIENER (Venlo 1823 - Brussels 1891)


Leopold Wiener was a Dutch-Belgian sculptor, mint master and medalist. In 1847 Wiener participated in a public competition for designs for a new sculptor of King Leopold I of Belgium. Wiener won the competition and was subsequently given the position of chief engraver at the Royal Mint of Belgium in Brussels. In this position he would design many other coins. After his death, the position of chief engraver was abolished and replaced by the position of chief of mint stamp manufacturing.
