Max TRUNINGER (Winterthur 1910 - Zurich 1986)


Early paintings were created from nature, but Truninger later turned to Cubism and dealt with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Despite strong abstract tendencies, he remains true to the representational. From 1963 he began to work with glass mosaics and tapestries. Examples include the long wall with stained glass in the large abdication hall in Nordheim crematorium, Zurich (1963–1965), or the tapestry hanging in the entrance hall of the Zürcher Kantonalbank (1972). Truninger is very skeptical about the term art in architecture, because he believes that there should be no dividing line between the two arts. The preoccupation with glass also flows into his panel painting. On the one hand, he enhances the luminosity of the color through transparency, on the other hand, the limited area gets even more weight.

Truninger's choice of motifs is mainly limited to studio scenes and still lifes, a pictorial world full of deliberation. Recurring motifs are musical instruments with which he tries to express his inner mood. Truninger keeps painting the same picture over the years, the date is determined by the last work assignment. His work thus shows loyalty to the content of the image and reveals the search for one's own final motif.
