Plateelbakkerij Zenith (1749-1984)

Studio

Zenith was founded in 1749 under the name Plateelbakkerij en Pijpenfabrieken Zenith, PJ van der Want, but has been using the name Zenith (after one of their tobacco pipes) since 1915. The company mainly made decorated utility and decorative pottery, which was painted directly on white shards, which were covered with a transparent glaze. Later on, other types of glazes are used, so that the patterns look thickly outlined. After the crisis years in the 1930s, Willem Stuurman is appointed as designer. From that period, Zenith also produces Delftware and souvenirs in addition to decorative pottery and tiles. Towards the end of the sixties, Zenith is the largest pottery factory in Gouda and experiments are underway with various transfer techniques. In 1984 Zenith closed its doors, the collection was partly transferred to the Municipal Museums of Gouda.
