Robbie CORNELISSEN (Utrecht, 1954) Education: Vrije Akademie The Hague and Rietveld Akademie Amsterdam Since Cornelissen exchanged his work as a biology teacher for that of an artist in 1987, his visual motifs gain in significance. That is, their function becomes clearer. Gradually they build their own memory in order to be able to draw from their own biography with all the more strength and decisiveness. They made a timid, almost light-shy entrance in which the inarticulate ground motifs - the house, the dog, the tiger, the artist's head, shaded by a straw hat - bobbed adrift on an empty or clumsily arranged image plane with lines and squares. . Nowadays it all looks a lot more confident. The number of basic motifs expands as their appearance in the image plane becomes sharper and more decided. We do not experience the grid patterns as a means of structuring the space of the image surface or as a transparent support for separate image motifs.
