Steve Keene (1957)

Artist

Steve Keene is an American artist currently living in Brooklyn who began his career in New York in the late 1980s/early 1990s as a member of the alternative radio station scene and alternative guitar bands gathered around the 'Drag city' label. His person and work have previously featured in the Triffids' video clip 'Steal it all'. His work can also be found on many album covers from the ''slacker'' music scene, as well as on perhaps the best Pavemant album: Wowee Zowee from 1996. Entirely in the spirit of the slacker movement, he applies an unpretentious small-scale Do it yourself method In his work, he believes that art should be as affordable as his favorite music, to achieve this he works in a very serial way on large numbers of paintings at the same time, his aim is to make an average of 24 paintings a day in order to reduce the price to keep it low. His work seems to be a mix of German eighties expressionism (''the new savages'') and a typical American unromantic mechanical large-scale extreme 'factory'-like way of producing art. This extreme way of working and marketing has also received recognition, just like the grunge hype, in the established art world, for example, he had major exhibitions/installations in the Wallraf Richards museum in Cologne and the Thread waxing space in New York. There is a waiting list for his work, but his production is so great that one never has to wait more than a month to buy a work.
