Toon Hermans (1916-2000)
Antoine Gerard Theodore (Toon) HERMANS, 1916 - 2000. Hermans became known for his formula of the one-man show, a performance performed by one man (albeit supported by a few musicians), which he was the first to introduce in the Dutch language area (Wim Sonneveld, Wim Kan and later generations have followed him in this). Although his work is often considered cabaret, it is actually not. He considered himself a clown, and that is probably the most accurate description. It was pure nonsense, framed by songs that praised life, or that were also frantic. His shows were in no way tied to current events (a hallmark of cabaret), and even his first televised show (from 1958) still feels fresh in the 21st century, and by no means dated.
