Wedgwood (1759)

Wedgwood

Wedgwood has been a brand name associated with high quality porcelain since the eighteenth century. Josiah Wedgwood started out as a self-employed potter in Staffordshire in 1759. During his career he made the famous series Queen's Ware (1762), Black Basalt (1768) and Jasper (1774). Over the years, Wedgwood has built ties with royal families around the world through the production of, for example, dinnerware for special occasions. The white porcelain objects that tried to imitate the visual language of imported Chinese tableware are especially well-known. This was extremely popular in higher circles.

Since 1940, the Wedgwood factory has been located in Barlaston, where handicrafts and modern methods are combined. Wedgwood is known for collaborations with outside designers and artists. Today, collection design is managed by the Wedgwood Design Studio. In 1987 Wedgwood merged with Waterford Crystal to form Waterford Wedgwood. Significant shares of this group were purchased in 2009 by KPS Capital Partners, introducing the name WWRD Holdings Limited (Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton). In 2015, WWRD became the property of Fiskars Corporation.
