Wifredo Lam was an artist of Chinese and Cuban descent. He started studying in Havana, after which he left for Madrid. The plan was initially to travel to Paris, but Spain became his home for 14 years. During the 1930s, Wifredo Lam's work was mainly inspired by surrealism, partly due to the death of his wife and son.
In 1938, Wifredo Lam left for Paris, where he worked for Picasso. Together, these two artists had an exhibition at New Yorker Perl Galleries. With a stopover in Havana for a few years, Wifredo Lam traveled back to Paris in 1946. The work he made in the meantime was a mix between surrealism and cubism.
