Willem Hendrik de VRIES (Workum 1908 - Purmerend 1969)
After his education at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, De Vries contacted Bert Nienhuis in 1929, who invited him to come to the Kunstnijverheid Instituut in Amsterdam to learn the ceramics trade. This institute will later become the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. De Vries worked for a while at the NV Keramische Industrie Fris, where he produced unique pieces. From 1933 to 1936, De Vries worked at Plateelbakkerij Regina, after which he founded his own pottery, called Elfhoeven, in 1936. This bakery has been around for a short time and produces few products. De Vries stood for useful shapes that must be able to be manufactured in an industrial way. The products are also sleek in shape and have modest color tones.
