1824-1895 Willem Vester, like his brothers and sister Johanna, went to school on the Voorweg with master Abraham Harrebomee. His talent for drawing and painting showed at an early age. In the years 1840-1843 he was taught by the painter Jan Jacob Spohler (Sp_hler) (1811-1866) who made a name for himself as a painter of beautiful winter landscapes, especially ice amusements decorated with many figures. Vester joined the Haarlem artists' association ?Kunst Zij Ons Doel? (KZOD), founded in 1821. An art society that still exists, which has its seat in the Waag building on the Spaarne. There he met the young Anton Mauve (1838-1888) in 1855, who would later distinguish himself as a prominent member of the Hague School impressionists. Like his teacher PFvan Os (son of the Hague cattle painter PGvan Os) and W.Vester, Mauve developed into a successful animal and landscape painter. Anton Mauve also made portrait drawings, including of mayor MSFde Moraaz Imans, which are still in Heemsteed's possession [in depot in the Noord-Hollands Archief]. It is also remarkable that Willem Vester limited himself to painting cattle and cows and that we do not encounter any horses or sheep in his canvases, which were readily available in the Heemsteed pastures. Furthermore, he has only drawn cows in the landscape, and unlike other artists, he has hardly ever depicted them as independent cattle. He also painted a number of buildings, such as the ruins of Brederode and Hageveld in Voorhout. Also the churches of Heemstede and Berkenrode and the former castle of Heemstede drawn and then etched. Willem Vester lived and worked in Heemstede almost all his life, with the exception of the last two years before he died in the Spaarnestad.
