Wolfgang Werkmeister was born in Berlin in 1941. He was 21 when he published his first etching. He studied with the graphic artist Gunther Böhmer at the Stuttgart Art Academy. Later he focused more on making lithographs. Teachers were Reich Mönch and Walter Raabe. Werkmeister graduated in 1964 after which he moved to Hamburg. Study trips took him to Paris, southern France, Spain, Oslo, Morocco and New Guinea. The making of etchings soon became the most important technique in his works. He learned this technique in all its facets. Later he also drew, made watercolors, painted and photographed. Nature is his lasting source of inspiration.
