De Scalden

Founded in 1889 - dissolved in 1914

The Scalden

The art group De Scalden had a twofold objective. First, she wanted to organize exhibitions of 'decorative art'. In addition, the group was involved in the artistic design of official parades and carnival processions. The aim was to give the float a more artistic character. De Scalden soon became a real art association, and many Antwerp art students joined. Not only painters and sculptors were members, but also poets, writers and composers. The main goal of the association was ultimately to bring art to the common man. The exhibitions that were organized showed works that were described as 'Monumental, Decorative and Applied Art'. There was no stylistic cohesion within the group, but the great diversity was the strength. In this way, De Scalden formed a bridge between traditional ideas and the first innovators.
