Founded in 1940
The Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors was founded in New York by the leading modernists of the time. The group started to take shape as early as 1934, but eventually the group was actually founded in 1940. The group wanted to escape the conflicts that dragged on after the 1930s, such as the financial crisis. The years leading up to the Second World War brought with them various tensions, to which artists responded. The purpose of the Federation was, and still is, to keep artists together.
