Dutch design

Although Dutch design has been around for centuries, the area only really took shape after the Second World War. It was not until the 1950s that companies incorporated industrial design into their corporate policies. From that period, Dutch design has been characterized by functionality, durability and affordability. Many designs released between the 1940s and 1970s are now being re-marketed due to the revival of the 'less is more' mentality.

Nowadays, Dutch design is mentioned in the same breath as Dutch Design, a design movement that only became really popular from the eighties. Droog Design played and still plays a major role in profiling Dutch Design as an international player. Design as a field was not developed to its full capacity for this, because the Netherlands, as a trading country, did not prioritize industrial development in a post-war society. Humor and innovative design are regularly recurring features in Dutch design. Nowadays, Dutch Design no longer stands for the geographically determined Dutch design, but for its own way of designing.
