Pastel Society

Founded in 1898

Pastel Society London

Since its introduction in the sixteenth century, pastels have been widely used by various artists, including great names such as Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Mary Cassat. The use of pastel was especially popular in France, where the Société des Pastellistes was founded. In 1888, the first exhibition of works of art exclusively made of pastels was organized in England. After this, the Society of British Pasellists was soon formed, which, however, had a short existence due to many criticisms. In 1898 another attempt was made and the Pastel Society was formed. The aim of the association is to promote the use of pastel in the contemporary art world. The Society hosts an annual exhibition, workshops, demonstrations and lectures.
