Yellow daffodils were originally only native to western Europe and western central Europe; through cultivation they are found as a garden plant throughout the temperate zones.
In Germany, the yellow daffodil is threatened as a wild plant (which is very different from the cultivated form, e.g. the flowers are considerably smaller) and is therefore strictly protected. Picking wild daffodils is therefore prohibited. One such wild occurrence is in Misselberg, for example.
The yellow daffodil usually thrives in sunny to semi-shady locations on moist, low-lime and slightly loamy meadows. It can also be found on the banks of streams, light-colored forests and in low mountain ranges. The yellow daffodil can grow at altitudes of up to 2000 meters.

The yellow daffodil, with all the cultivated varieties and hybrids that have emerged from it, is the economically most important of the daffodils. Every year when it blooms, it is sold in large quantities as a cut flower. Due to its long shelf life (up to 10 days in a cool location), it is very popular in floristry. Their bulbs are sold in significant quantities for balconies, gardens and public green spaces.

Because of its skin-irritating and toxic properties, the yellow daffodil was used in ancient times as a remedy for skin diseases such as ringworm and ulcers. Later folk medicine used them (like the white daffodil) against colds and whooping cough and as an emetic.
