(Halfweg, January 29, 1947) is a Dutch painter. Markus is known for her paintings of women in bandages. Markus is self-taught and her style is realistic. She held her first exhibition in 1981 and great success came from the mid-1980s. In the early 1990s, Markus moved from Udenhout to Amsterdam. In 1995 she opened her own studio and exhibition space on Prinseneiland. Markus is a striking appearance with her clothing style. She is regarded as the society painter of the Netherlands and therefore appears frequently in the press. In 2007, the Noord-Brabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch showed a retrospective of Ans Markus. Ans Markus was artist of the year 2009. Artist portraits Following her tributes from the 1980s, Markus painted youth portraits of Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Egon Schiele, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Edward Hopper between 2013 and 2015 in her well-known realistic style. She asked herself whether these artists could already imagine in their youth what they would achieve with their art. To what extent is being an artist a destiny? With a self-portrait as a girl, Markus also asks herself that question and in one movement she places herself in the art historical tradition of painters who take people as a starting point in their work. Other tributes in the exhibition include couturiers Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Hubert de Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto, Vivien Westwood and Oscar de la Renta. There are also several portraits of famous Dutch people such as Arjan Ederveen, Job Cohen and John de Mol and a selection from her impressive Medea cycle from the late 1990s. Paintings from the magical realistic bandana series, with which Markus has managed to reach a large and loyal audience in recent decades, were also absent from Museum de Fundatie.
