Het leven van Tonny Buytendijk speelde zich af tussen Amsterdam en Groningen. Geboren in de hoofdstad kreeg hij zijn schildersopleiding aan de academie Minerva in Groningen waar hij, met een onderbreking van 2 jaar (1933-1935) bleef wonen. In 1941 werd hij lid van De Ploeg en nam deel aan hun exposities met vooral Groninger en Drentse landschappen. Na zijn terugkeer naar Amsterdam in 1946 was hij o.a. nog als docent verbonden aan Minerva. Hij schilderde snel, in expressief-impressionistische stijl, en deelde zijn voorkeur voor het direct in de natuur werken met de andere Ploeg-schilders. Zijn Amsterdamse stadsgezichten uit de jaren '50 en '60 zijn duidelijk expressionistisch.
