August Köhler lived in Stuttgart from 1881-1964. From 1903 to 1912 he completed his studies at the Stuttgart Academy with Poetzelberger, Landenberger and Haug. In 1912 he received the Academy's gold medal.
He was considered a typical representative of traditional Swabian painting of the early 20th century.
In 1927 he was represented at the anniversary exhibition of the Württemberg Art Association, and in 1941 at the anniversary exhibition of the Stuttgart Artists' Association. In the 1930s and 1940s, Köhler was a professor at the Stuttgart Art Academy, and the city's art commission, of which he was a member, purchased more than 20 of his paintings for the city's art collection.
