Dirk de Herder was born in Rotterdam in 1914 and grew up in an artistic environment, his father Alle de Herder was a musician. De Herder initially became a painter, but soon discovered that he could express his passions in photography: looking and composing. De Herder maintained personal contact with Brassaï, who worked from Paris, while in the Netherlands he connected with Henri Berssenbrugge. In addition, he frequented painters' circles; he was a photographer for the Cobra movement for some time, through which he got to know Karel Appel and Corneille well. His work also brought him to the VARA, where he portrayed hundreds of artists from 1954 to 1964, including the Doorsnee family, Pipo de Clown, Dorus (Tom Manders) and pianist Arthur Rubinstein. Light plays an important role in De Herder's 'photographic dreams'. He often found his subjects close to home: flowers, people, streets and beaches. They figure in his best photographs: of an open window with lace curtains, taken against the light, and of shiny streets after a nightly rain shower. It is not for nothing that artistic photographers such as Brassaï, André Kertész and Man Ray were his examples.
