Émile-Antoine Bourdelle (Montauban, October 30, 1861 – Le Vésine), October 1, 1929) was a French sculptor and painter. In Mountauban, a small town just above Toulouse, his father had a furniture workshop, where Bourdelle started working as a woodworker when he was fourteen years old. He learned to draw from Armand Cambon (Montauban, February 22, 1818- Montauban, January 14, 1885), a painter and friend of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Montauban, August 29, 1780 – Paris, January 14, 1867), the great neoclassical painter. After Ingres' death, Cambon was appointed as his will and testamentary executor and responsible for the establishment of the Musée Ingres. As early as 1851, Ingris had donated part of his collection, which consisted of his own work, the work of pupils, a collection of ancient Greek vases and other antiquities to his hometown. In 1854, a Salle Ingris was opened in the town hall of Montauban, which was located in the former episcopal palace from the seventeenth century. After Ingres' death in 1867, the collection was considerably expanded to include thousands of drawings. After training here, Émile-Antoine Bourdelle went to Toulouse to train as a sculptor, where he studied for ten years at the Académie des Beaux Arts. When he was 24 years old he was awarded a scholarship to the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. His teachers were Alexandre Falguière and Jules Dalou. In 1888 he produced his first sculptures of Beethoven, works with great pathos, monumental power and harmonic movement. He was one of the pioneers of monumental sculpture of the twentieth century. Auguste Rodin admired his work and from 1893 to 1908 Bourdelle worked as Rodin's assistant. Bourdelle developed into a well-known teacher, both in Rodins and in his own studio. Many later famous artists (including Alberto Giacometti) were taught by him, which gave him a considerable influence on sculpture. From 1909 until his death in 1929 he was a teacher at the important Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He was the founder and vice president of the Salon des Tuileries in Paris. Antoine was buried at Cimetière du Montparnasse.

In Mountaban, the Museé Ingris mainly honors the work of two famous sons of the city: the painters Ingris will have six rooms on the first floor and the work of Bourdelle will be shown in the Salle doré. The Salle doré also houses works by Armand Cambon and by lesser-known painters from the Montauban School: Marcel-Lenoir, Andrieu, Cadène and Desnoyer. During World War II, the museum served as a home for the Mona Lisa. Bourdelle's Paris home and studio on Rue Antoine Bourdelle houses the Musée Bourdelle, which opened in 1949. It provides an overview of the artist's extensive work. The building was subsequently provided with new wings to accommodate the monumental statues. Another 56 of Bourdelle's sculptures are in Musée jardin Antoine Bourdelle, a museum/sculpture park in Égreville
