At the beginning of his career Andriesse was considered a child prodigy, at the age of fifteen he already had his first exhibition. In his work Andriesse had a great preference for eternal themes such as growth and death. In his work he often repeated the same motifs, making it seem as if he was trying his best to understand them. His main themes were flowers, skulls and skeletons. For example, he painted a lot of sunflowers, which he also exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum in 1988. It was striking that he did not seem to care much about art history and/or the demands of contemporary art. He was described as a loner, coquettish, melancholy and virtuoso. In the period before his death Andriesse also started experimenting with ceramics.

On March 23, 1993, Andriesse died of natural causes at the age of 35. He was found dead in his home in Amsterdam and was eventually buried in Zorgvlied cemetery there.
