Gilbert Decock was born in Knokke in 1928 and died there in 2007.

He was educated at the Academy of Bruges. Decock was a very important representative of Belgian abstract art and, moreover, an outspoken defender of pure, hard abstraction. His work can easily be categorized under geometric abstract painting. Decock's work is also very minimalistic: he limited himself in both the use of color and form. In terms of color he almost exclusively used white, black and shades of gray. In terms of shapes, he limited himself to the circle and the square. The circle symbolizes the infinite, the divine, while the square symbolizes the limited and the earthly.

He received two awards for his painting, in 1966 the Europe prize and in 1967 the prize of the city of Knokke. From 1966 to 1968 he was a member of the group 'Geoform'.

Work in the Kunst-Wet metro station in Brussels (1980), in the collections of the State, the Print Room in Brussels and, among other things, in the Museums of Antwerp (Middelheim), Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Kortrijk, Ostend, Dunkirk, Maubeuge and Utrecht .
