Henri Laurens - Mermaids

The only striking thing about this sheet is the flowing, fin-like shapes - Laurens created moving, lively features through the curved lines. Overlapping or intertwining white lines against a monochrome brown background create a balanced tension of emptiness and fullness. Laurens' linocut was published in the Christmas edition of the magazine "XXe Siècle" in 1938 together with, among others, Henri Matisse's "Teeny" and Joan Miró's "Le chat" (XXe Siècle No. 4, Noel 1938, p. 43).
