  • Hubert Bekman ( Hubertus Cornelis Gerardus) was born on November 4, 1896 in Voorburg and died on July 29, 1974 in The Hague.

    He followed his education at the Hague Academy with evening and winter courses and the Hague Sketch Club. Mainly formed itself. He was a member of Verve, Pulchri Studio, the Haagse Kunstkring and in Amsterdam the "Graphische" (Graphische Association for the Promotion of Graphic Art) and of the New Images League. Before the Second World War he was a member of "De Groep" with, among others, Jan van Heel, Rein Draijer and Jan Franken Pzn (Pieterzoon). In the fifties, he belonged to the Voorburg artistic working group De Nieuwe Ploeg.

    Bekman worked at the PTT and painted until 1948, afterwards he was involved with wooden figurines of humans and animals.

    Worked a lot in Limburg and worked as a painter, graphic artist and sculptor.
    In addition to his paintings and figurines, he also made etchings, linocuts, woodcuts and lithographs.

    Work in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, the Dutch Postal Museum in The Hague, the Gemeentemuseum Maassluis and in the National Collection.

    In 1932 Hubert Bekman together with Sierk Schröder won the Vigelius Prize and in 1952 the Jacob Maris Prize for Graphics (Material Prize). In addition, many awards, including from Budapest.
    Great credit for his design of a series of stamps for the United Nations.
