Byars studied art, psychology and philosophy in his hometown. In the late 1950s he moved to Kyoto, Japan. In 1974 he was a guest in the studio of the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst (DAAD) in Berlin, where he conceived the Golden Tower, which he exhibited in different versions and in several places, such as on documenta 7 (1982). , in Kassel.
