De Rotterdamse kunstschilder Jan Hovener is in de schaduw van het Feyenoord stadion geboren op 14 augustus 1936. Na zijn studie aan de Rotterdamse Academie, won hij al op jonge leeftijd de ‘Talensprijs’ (1959). Sinds die tijd is hij door zijn grote talent niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Een zelfportret waarin hij zijn passie voor de schilderkunst duidelijk naar voren wist te brengen, bracht Willem Sandberg, directeur van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, tot grote verbazing. Hij schreef over het zelfportret van Hovener, als iemand die wat kon en een ongelooflijke visie had. Zeker voor iemand in de leeftijd van twintig jaar.
