- Jan Sirks is net als de schilder J.H. van Mastenbroek synoniem met de verbeelding van de Rotterdamse haven. Al op zeer jonge leeftijd toonde Jan Sirks een groot tekentalent. Zijn eerste grote tentoonstelling hield hij in 1915 in Utrecht. Het is zeer waarschijnlijk dat deze tekening daar al getoond werd. Het drukke leven van de Rotterdamse binnenstad, de drukte in de haven en langs de Maas hebben Jan Sirks tot prachtige werken geinspireerd. Ook de zware trekpaarden die in Rotterdam de sleperskarren trokken waren regelmatig zijn bron van inspiratie. Op de achterzijde van deze tekening staat ook een schets van zo'n paard. Naast tekenaar was Jan Sirks een begaafd etser.
