Jan Toorop maakte de tekening van de mijnwerker tijdens een bezoek aan Zuid-Limburg in de eerste week van juni 1915. Samen met de aalmoezenier van sociale werken in de mijnstreek, H.A. Poels, pastoor Jan Röselaers van Hoensbroek en staatsmijndirecteur J.C.F. Bunge bezocht hij het ondergrondse bedrijf van Staatsmijn Wilhelmina. 

Een zekere Jan Quadackers, een 42-jarige mijnwerker uit Hoensbroek, stond model voor Toorops crayon- of krijttekening. Naar verluidt poseerde Quadackers overigens niet in het ondergrondse bedrijf van een mijn, maar in de kelder van de pastorie in Hoensbroek.
